Most reviews of free software do not have to open by establishing that the software exists. This one does. Hugging Face closed the original HuggingChat at the start of July 2025, offered users a zip export of their conversations, and said it was going to build something more integrated. For three and a half months there was nothing at the address.
HuggingChat Omni launched on 16 October 2025 in the same place. It is a different product wearing the old name, and it is more interesting than what it replaced.
How Omni is different from the thing that closed
The old HuggingChat was a chat interface with a model dropdown. You picked from a short list of open models, and the quality of your answer depended on whether you had picked well — which required knowing things about open models that most people reasonably do not.
Omni removes the dropdown from the critical path. A routing model reads your request and dispatches it to whichever model in the catalogue suits that kind of work, drawing on a catalogue that has grown past a hundred models served through Hugging Face Inference across many providers. Coding goes somewhere good at code, translation goes to a translation model, general questions go to a general one.
The detail that makes this respectable rather than opaque is that it tells you what it did: the name of the model handling your request appears while the answer streams. You are not being quietly downgraded to something cheap, and if you disagree with the router you can still pick a model yourself.
The credits, which is where free stops
Free here means metered, not unlimited. Usage runs on Hugging Face inference credits: signed-in free accounts get a modest monthly allowance, and PRO subscribers get a substantially larger one. Heavy use on a free account will run out.
That is a fair arrangement and an unusually transparent one — running inference over a hundred models across multiple providers costs real money, and a credit balance is a more honest way to express that than an undocumented daily cap. It does mean this is not the tool for all-day conversational use without paying, and anyone who arrives expecting an unlimited free ChatGPT will be disappointed by the end of the month.
The part that actually matters: you can take it with you
The chat interface is open source, and Hugging Face keeps it that way — the announcement was explicit that Omni is 100 percent open source and self-hostable from its GitHub repository.
Given that this product has already been shut down once, that is not a box-ticking exercise. Every other assistant covered here can be discontinued, repriced or repositioned, and your only recourse is to export what you can and leave. Here the software survives the service. You can run the same interface against your own inference, or a provider you choose, and nothing about Hugging Face's product strategy can take it away from you.
That is the honest case for HuggingChat in 2026: not that it is the strongest free assistant, because it is not, but that it is the only one on this list where the vendor cannot unilaterally end your access to the software.
